The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.
The ex-president was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in September and sentenced more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.
This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.
Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns
In a paperwork permitting the detention, the judge said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.
This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the protest called by his offspring.
His child, Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your settee? I urge you to battle with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the magistrate's ruling was the potential of his move to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a history of organizing to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.
The court filing emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, the capital city, is located around 8 miles from his dwelling.
International Reactions
Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist American leader Donald Trump, prompting him to impose a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.
Bolsonaro is being held in a national police facility in the capital and will have a imprisonment assessment on the following day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.
They also petitioned that the former president be permitted to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he needed regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other ailments.
Background on Conviction
The former president was determined responsible of orchestrating a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the presidential race to his political opponent, Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which involved plans to murder Lula and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.
The plot was prevented because it failed to get the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was inaugurated without issue on the first day of 2023.
But a seven days after, on January 8th, thousands of his followers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the capital, Brazil's capital.
The security forces took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.
The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been provoked by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, restore order and return him to office.
At the period, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.
He was also banned from running for public office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.
The former president called the court case a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 national vote.
