The anticipation around this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The question is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is working on a completely new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a audacious trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This phrasing implies that the team might be crafting a faster-paced experience rather than another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it sparked the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, player agency, and flexible progression—qualities that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths that are viable by choosing a distinct build with a personal story.
The series is also famously permissive, enabling players to experiment both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be approached in diverse methods, sometimes in unexpected fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, players can anticipate more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
