Pat Cummins Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the likelihood of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations around that, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and stated that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
