Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Displacement Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the massive storm caused extensive sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of millions of people nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented rising waters reaching the tops of houses and residences washed out by strong flows.

Our team rescued fourteen people stranded on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and a second individual killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

According to meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making cyclones more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Scientists report that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events cause an average of US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration last week because of the severe damage from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
