Nevertheless, physicians and chemists have cautions that the sale of what remains an unlicensed drug in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could result in individuals injecting products of unknown origin.

Several experts said the popularity for the experimental drug could be linked to the rising price of approved slimming products such as Mounjaro.

Marketing retatrutide on TikTok or messaging apps is illegal in the UK, as it is an unapproved drug that cannot be marketed or distributed for human use under the British medical regulations.

Several content creators try to circumvent the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled drug, but promotion and supply can still violate pharmaceutical, advertising, and consumer regulations, risking penalties, prosecution or prison.

Online Trading Operations

Investigations also discovered communities with up to 9,000 members selling the experimental drug using the platform's built-in discovery tool, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” instantly brings up channels with thousands of users, populated with photos of weight loss, positive reviews and step-by-step guides for mixing or administering at home.

Within moments of joining one community, a vendor posted WhatsApp details, where the majority of transactions take place. “People are administering substances they can’t verify. Even if the research behind retatrutide is valid, these online versions may not include what they advertise,” said a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmacy at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor connected the surge in demand to recent price rises for approved weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, individuals are using online platforms. Her team has previously encountered patients injured by self-injection from unconfirmed suppliers. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or WhatsApp is taking chances with your health,” stated the doctor. “These substances could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”

Producer Position

A representative from the pharmaceutical company stated the substance was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been reviewed or approved by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this point no one can sell [it] for human use,” they explained, noting that any product “falsely representing itself as a company experimental product not yet approved … may expose users to potentially serious medical dangers”.
