Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the ability to challenge particular decisions made by the official, following the practice currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development comes just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
