Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by captain Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several conversations following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" observation after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special going into this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead after three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There's no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
